Only 15.8% of PMR products comply with all requirements of the R&TTE directive
Only 15.8% of PMR products comply with all requirements of the R&TTE directive, a recent Market Surveillance exercise report carried out by European Market Surveillance authorities indicates.
A joint cross-border market surveillance campaign in the field of the Radio Equipment & Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (‘R&TTE’) Directive 1999/5/EC was carried out between 1 September 2008 and 1 June 2009 by 23 market surveillance authorities in Europe. The products were chosen to reflect the importance of the applications to commerce, for example 2.4 GHz wireless Local Area Networks (‘LAN’), CCTV video, PMR etc. In total 259 products were included in the survey.
Key findings of the report were:
- A total of 259 products were surveyed, 218 did not fulfil at least one provision of the R&TTE Directive
- The biggest area of non-compliance was the lack of all the necessary technical documentation required by law being present in the technical construction file
Jean-Louis Evans, Managing Director of TÜV Product Service Limited states: “ Market Surveillance in Europe is increasing, with Surveillance Authorities empowered to impose fines and withdraw products from the market if the product is found not to comply with the R&TTE directive”
TÜV offers a number of services to help manufacturers, importers and suppliers of radio devices meet the complex requirements of the R&TTE directive. TÜV can provide test plans, carry out the necessary testing and provide a Technical File Compilation Service. For complete piece of mind, TÜV’s Telecoms Certification Body, BABT, can provide a full Notified Body Opinion, which will allow the use of the CE0168 number on a compliant product.
