TÜV SÜD BABT is the certification body for TÜV SÜD Product Service, and is a Notified Body under the Marine Equipment Directive 96/98/EC (MED) regulated by the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency. 

Products Scope

TÜV SÜD BABT is a Notified Body for carrying out conformity assessment procedures for Modules B, D, E, F and G under the Marine Equipment Directive.  The scope of appointment covers Annex A.1/4 (Navigation Equipment) and A.1/5 (Radio-communication Equipment). 

Marine Equipment Directive Modules B and G

We will assess your test data and supporting information for compliance with either the Type Examination (Module B) or Unit Verification (Module G) requirements.

Marine Equipment Directive Modules D and E

We will assess the Quality Management System of the location who perform the final assembly for compliance with the requirements of Module D (Production Quality Assurance) or Module E (Product Quality Assurance.

Marine Equipment Directive Module F

We will agree a test and sampling plan for a batch production items; we then assess the test results on each sample against the agreed plan and limits. This is the TÜV SÜD BABT implementation of the Product Verification (Module F) requirements.

TÜV SÜD BABT Certification

The Marine Equipment Directive is only applicable to certain types of marine vessels, which covers equipment used on ships registered under the flags of the EU member states.  For non-SOLAS vessels it is not necessary to gain MED approval, but it is however necessary to gain CE Marking for products by achieving compliance to the following EU Directives (as applicable):

• Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive (R&TTE) 
• EMC Directive

As well as European Directive compliance TÜV SÜD BABT can provide the following certification services for the USA and Canada:

• FCC Certification
• US Coast Guard Approval
• Industry Canada Type Approval

It is important to note that TÜV SÜD BABT is an independent certification body and manufacturers can apply for certification directly to TÜV SÜD BABT without the involvement of TÜV SÜD Product Service.
