How to gain Marine Equipment Directive approval?
All products need testing, type examination and continual compliance in order to gain approval.
Testing can be conducted by TÜV SÜD Product Service, a UKAS-accredited laboratory, which is TÜV SÜD BABT’s parent company. Experienced project managers will look after your testing for a seamless transition. Testing can be completed to IEC 60945, which is a general requirement for Marine Equipment, testing can also be completed to a number of other test standards that are contained within our UKAS schedule.
TÜV SÜD BABT is a Notified Body for carrying out conformity assessment procedures under Marine Equipment Directive Annex A, and is a Notified Body for a number of different directives.
Although TÜV SÜD BABT provides approval it is not mandatory to get your products tested by TÜV SÜD Product Service, any test house recognised under the CB Scheme can be used. However, TÜV SÜD Product Service is the UKs leading Environmental, Radio Frequency, EMC and Safety testing laboratory with all its facilities under one roof.
TÜV SÜD BABT can grant type approval to the Marine Equipment Directive for Annex A.1/4 (Navigation Equipment) and Annex A.1/5 (Radio Communications Equipment), focusing on providing EC Type-Examination for Module B and Product Verification to Module F. This consists of fixed type examination, and sample testing of batches of production items.
This type of examination has the benefit of agreeing the terms of the sample, whilst at the same time preparing the sample. This means that when the terms of the sample are approved the product is ready to be tested immediately, enabling a quicker time to market.
Other TÜV SÜD BABT options for Marine Equipment Directive compliance are meeting the production phase requirements through a Production/Product Quality Assurance Audit to Modules D or E. TÜV SÜD BABT can also provide Unit Verification for one off special marine equipment for products with limited production.
Marine Equipment Directive ‘Wheel Mark’
Equipment approved under the Marine Equipment Directive must be affixed with a ‘Wheel Mark’ followed by the Notified Body Identification Number and the year the product was approved. Certification carried out by TÜV SÜD BABT will be displayed as:
The characters “yy” shall be replaced by the last 2 digits of the year in which the Wheel mark was affixed to the product
The Wheel mark in respect of the Directive may only be applied to equipment for which a Declaration of Conformity exists and one of the following have been issued
- A valid Certificate of Conformity after compliance with the appropriate requirements Module B ( Type examination) and Production Quality Assurance (Module D); or
- A valid Certificate of Conformity after compliance with the appropriate requirements Module B ( Type examination) and Product Quality Assurance (Module E)
- a valid Product Verification Certificate following a Module B Certificate
- a Valid Unit Verification Certificate
Note: The Wheel Mark may not be applied solely as a result of a Module B (Type Examination Certificate).
