New SAR Certification to Generate Confidence in the Mobile Market

issued: 24 February 2004

Contact: chris.baird@babt.com

Research has shown that while considerable disquiet remains about the radiation effects of mobiles, retailers often lack the knowledge required to advise and reassure would-be purchasers. The end user can now rest assured that, if a product has the BABT SAR Mark affixed, it complies with the current EU standard, and that ongoing surveillance is carried out to ensure that the product continues to comply with this standard.

BABT (UKAS Accredited test facility, No. 0141 Group) is accredited for SAR testing of GSM and 3G phones. Together with its SAR partner, IndexSAR, BABT is involved in ongoing research and development in relation to measurement and assessment techniques used in SAR testing.

Naturally, the credibility of the BABT SAR Mark relies on the application of rigorous procedures. SAR testing to EN 50361 by BABT, or a recognised test facility, is followed by a technical review by BABT technical certifiers.

To maintain a valid certificate, the manufacturer must seek BABT approval for any modifications to the equipment, ongoing evidence of test results must be demonstrated and the manufacturing facility will need to maintain a recognised BABT quality system certification.

Once the mark has been awarded the phone manufacturer can display it on its product, packaging, product related promotional material, and Web site. In addition, a list of approved products is posted to BABT’s Web site, where it is available to thousands of visitors a month.

The BABT SAR Mark scheme initially applies to mobile phones that comply with EN 50361, the standard developed for the European Union. It is envisaged that the scope of the scheme will be expanded over time to cover other standards.
